autism non verbal + holding child back at kindy

My daughters son has just been diagnosed with autism. The kindy ( he is nearly 3) has suggested he remain with the younger children, as his vocab is very limited, though if he was with the children of his age they would be talking to him and this might aid his social and language skills. He is a big boy and has no problems with either fine or gross motor skills. Has anyone had a similar experience? From my understanding language is picked up by being spoken to, which younger children won't do as readily. He does understand what you say to him, though I believe chooses when to interact and comply with what is required. Any ideas, ta
