If you could go back in time, what would you tell yourself?

Postby StellaOzzy » Sun Mar 26, 2017 10:50 pm

One of the most stressful parts of my life was finding out about my son's autism diagnosis and then trying to find services.
I received a lot of help from friends and experts, and now I want to put together a website that helps guide other parents through the process of understanding and finding treatments.

I would love any wisdom that you could provide me, that would help a future parent start the journey of understanding and treating autism.
What do you wish you knew?
What would have saved you time or stress?
What mistakes did you make?
What resources were invaluable?
What resource do you wish was available?
What gave you the most trouble?

My vision:
While there are a ton of amazing websites out there, its still hard for a parent to figure out where to start and what resources are available to them.
I want to help them learn to ask the right questions and have the background to make better decisions
It needs to be easier for parents to find local doctors that can diagnose Autism, and find local therapists that can address problem areas

Thank you for your time

I am working on that at http://raisingautism.net
It is a long term project.
Lots to say.

... its still hard for a parent to figure out where to start and what resources are available to them.

That's where we are right now. Daughter was seen by a bevy of specialists -- speech pathologists, occupational therapist, nurses, doctors, etc. They all agree that something is going on but we're the ones who don't understand what that something is. She's above average in a number of areas but we've been told she'll benefit from an aid in the classroom. This is baffling to us so we're trying to find our own answers.

I wish we all can do this!

And to my 19-years old self, I’d say:

You are in the lowest weight of your teenage-adult life (at least until you become 26). If possible maintain this please. Try excercise, it’s for your own good.
That guy is adorable, he’s one of the greatest guy you’ll ever meet. Cherish every moment with him because soon you’ll be so cruel and leave him for your future husband. But this poor guy will be stuck over you for another 5 years. So just give him the best love because he deserves it.
Start investing, not saving. Don’t be afraid to start business. You’ll be surprised how fast you can empty your savings for parties. Lock some in investment.
Your friends are the best. They’ll help you in so many ways. Love them as much as you always do now.
Interior design is not for you. Accept it and move on. Your parents love you and want you to get the best of your life. Say yes when they ask you to study abroad. Don’t blame them for getting you out of Jakarta. You’ll be forever thankful for what they’re done.
Keep being you! Don’t listen to people’s comments about your dramatic color hair changes and bright attires. Your family and friends approve it, and people colors their hair green in future!
I love you and you’ll always love yourself more than anything. That’s how we role honey! Highfive!

I wish to support her more than that, and to find better specialist. :|
