Hi I am a neurotypical stepparent to a 16-year old boy. Pardon my cluelessness or what not. It I need an opinion from experts on this subject. I cannot ask his mother if he has some kind of autism because I fear offending her. But I kind of maybe consider the possibility because I am so confused by his ways/attitude. He doesn't talk very much but is intelligent. He does not say acknowledge people unless told to do so or if he is greeted first. He does not smile unless something is funny. He plays with his cousins though and has friends in school though he does not seek them out. He has very good grades in school. I am not sure if he is just snobbish or haughty but he hardly ever talks to me. He will answer politely and mirror the mood when he is asked how he is but he NEVER asks in return how a person is. Does this sound within the autism spectrum? Or can you ask me more questions? I know a doctor should best diagnose this but it will never happen. I'm struggling enough with the Mom who was diagnosed with ADHD but refuses to seek help/medication. Thank you all.

He certainly has some symptoms but there is no way for a layman to diagnose it from afar. The autistic spectrum is pretty wide and diverse. Some kids have some stereotypical symptoms but not others. There is whole battery of testing required to get an accurate diagnosis.
