Sticking Stuff in Ears

Hi All-

My 9 yr-old autistic boy has started sticking objects in his ears, and getting them stuck there.

He seems to like the sensation of tickling the inside of his ear, and will do this with just about anything he can, and sometimes these things break or get stuck in there.

Well, the first time it happened a year ago, we were barely able to hold him still enough at the urgent care with three people to get the stuff out.

Now a year later, we had to bring him in a week ago to have some mushed up bar soap removed which he had pushed all the way down, and I am not sure we even got it all, with three people trying to hold him down.

Now today he has more stuff stuck in both ears, and four people at the urgent care could not hold him still enough to ensure they didn't perf his ear drum, and they told us that we will have to take him to the ER to have him sedated in order to pick/clean the stuff out of his ears.

On the one hand, we have him on Minnesota Assistance, so there are no co-pays, but uncertain to what degree ER and sedation visits are covered.

Obviously, I am foreseeing financial doom if we need to take him to the ER 3x/week to pick stuff out of his ears.

I think this stuff in his ears is causing him some minor irritation/discomfort, and there is redness in at least one ear (infection?), so its not like we can just say, "Oh well, it is what it is," and just leave it there.

This is a bad situation, and I was just wondering if anyone had any helpful advice?
