FDA has been trying to impose the same requirements on gene editing as any new drug development: 3 stages of clinical studies followed by FDA approval. Currently there are just a few companies working on gene editing:
Bluebird Bio (sickle cell anemia)
Sarepta Therapeutics (Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy)
Biomarin (hemophilia A)
Spark Therapeutics (biallelic RPE65-mediated inherited retinal disease) - FDA approved this year
These treatments will cost close to $1mln/year. However, biohacking could be a parallel faster and cheaper path but full of unpredictable results including tragedies. I can see how people with SNP mutations responsible for such developmental disorders as Rett and Fragile X will join the ranks of biohacking instead of waiting for some company to start developing a gene editing therapy through regular FDA channels, which may take 7 years - the time that we don't have. Even people with non-debilitating disorders such as boldness but with enough money soon will be practicing biohacking.
