Experiment attracts global attention to biological effects of wireless radiation

Garden Cress won't germinate near a router

A group of 5 girls have carried out a science experiment at Hjallerup School in North Jutland, Denmark that saw garden cress seeds placed in 12 tubs and split into two batches. Both batches were placed in different rooms that remained the same temperature, and were given the same amount of water and sunlight over the course of 12 days.

You’d expect both batches of 6 tubs to grow equally well, but one set didn’t even germinate. The reason? They were placed next to two routers. Although it’s unclear exactly why this happened, it is thought that the radiation produced by the routers is what stopped the seeds germinating.

The girls’ experiment was geared towards testing the potential impact of phone radiation on surrounding objects. They didn’t have phones to use though, so decided the routers were a good alternative. The experiment has certainly caught the interest of the international science community and is set to be repeated in a more controlled environment. One of the first controlled experiments will be carried out by Professor Olle Johansson from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. Hopefully it will shed more light on why this is happening.

Johansson has said he’s impressed by the girl’s experiment and hopes they will continue into research careers when they are older. For the moment, the girls just find the attention exciting and have all decided not to sleep with a mobile phone anywhere near their beds for fear of it having some negative impact just like with the cress.

Experimental study regarding melatonin and microwaves.

4 groups of rats were examined: 1.) sham exposure, treated with saline injection, 2.) sham exposure, treated with 2 mg/kg melatonin injection, 3.) exposure and 4.) exposure, treated with 2 mg/kg melatonin injection (21 rats per group). After 20, 40 and 60 days, seven animals of each group were anesthetized and killed after removing the thymus.

In the exposed groups without melatonin (after 20, 40 and 60 days), the level of lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation, as well as the enzyme activities of catalase, xanthine oxidase, DNAse I and DNAse II were significantly increased compared to the control group. An administration of melatonin prevented these effects in the exposed group (except for the protein oxidation after 20 and 40 days).

Melatonin protects thymus against oxidative stress caused by exposure to microwaves and modulates proliferation/apoptosis of thymocytes

Do autistic children have microwave sickness? Many of the symptoms are similar. I copied and pasted this for anyone interested.

Do You Have Microwave Sickness?
06/02/2007

Many people have a hard time fathoming that something that they cannot see, touch, smell, taste or hear - sense with the five senses - can harm them so much. But if people did really know the facts regarding the dangers of cell phones and WiFi and the masts that emit a pervasive level of microwave radiation, would they still be willing to use them? Would they still be willing to allow the antennas to be built in vicinity of their homes, work places, schools, and hospitals?

Dr. George Carlo, who used to run a multi-million dollar research program for the cell phone industry and went public regarding the dangers posed by cell phones, uses the analogy of putting a frog in water. If you put a frog in boiling water, it will jump out. However, if you put a frog in cold water and gradually heat the water, you can cook the frog because the frog's body will adjust to the slight changes in temperature and it will not notice it is being cooked. Well, the same thing might be happening to an unsuspecting public - a public that has not been informed about the real dangers of microwave radiation from cell phones, WiFi and other high-frequency-radiation emitting devices and antennas.

The truth of the matter, your cell phone and your WiFi might very well indeed be making you and those around you sick! Please read on!

1.Symptoms known to be caused by exposure to microwave radiation: insomnia and other sleep disturbances, headaches, swollen lymph nodes, depression, anxiety, loss of appetite, hypoxia (lack of oxygen getting to your tissues), inability to concentrate, forgetfulness, dizziness, irritability, nausea, hyperactivity, fatigue, vision problems, dry eyes, eye inflammation, weakened immune system, allergies, frequent urination, night sweats, extreme thirst, etc. These symptoms very often suddenly appear in people who have had a cell phone tower installed nearby their home.

2. Microwave exposure induces Oxidative Damage leading to depletion of the body's natural store of antioxidants like Super Oxide Dimutase (SOD), Catalase, Glutathione, CoQ10, and Melatonin. When the body becomes depleted in antioxidants, premature aging, increased infections, and sticky blood are just a few of the consequences. With a depressed level of antioxidants in the blood, for example, high-density lipoproteins (HDL) or the good cholesterol will bind with free radicals (oxidants) turning the good cholesterol into bad cholesterol or low-density lipoproteins (LDL). This leads to more viscous blood which in turn can lead to blood clots leading to strokes and even heart attacks.

3. Microwaves have been known to effect an abnormal influx of calcium into cells. When there is an abnormal influx of calcium into mast cells, for example, they produce histamine. This is just one of the ways in which microwave exposure has been known to trigger or aggravate allergic reactions.

4. Microwave exposure has been known to induce mitochondria dysfunction. The mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell. Dysfunctional mitochondria will interfere with the cells' ability to produce energy and can be linked to fatigue and possibly even obesity.

5. Microwaves have been shown to depolarize the body's red blood cells. This will cause the red blood cells to clump together and when this happens, the amount of oxygen getting to the brain cells and the cells of the body's other organs is diminished substantially leading to hypoxia. This can cause symptoms similar to altitude sickness: nausea, dizziness, inability to concentrate, and so on.

6. Microwave exposure has been shown in studies to induce a decrease in the numbers of Natural Killer (NK) cells, a form of white blood cell which is the body's first line of defense against pathogens. This leads to the body's weakened ability to recover from viral and other types of infections. Therefore, people exposed to microwave radiation would take longer than normal to recover from your day-to-day infections.

7. Exposure to long-term microwave radiation has been shown to change a particular form of white blood cell (lymphocyte) ratio - known as the T-helper/T-suppressor (T4/T8) cell ratio - from normal to abnormal. Abnormalities in this T-lymphocyte ratio have been shown to lead to an increased susceptibility to viral, fungal, and bacterial infections. Symptoms include sore throats, low-grade fevers, weakness, persistent fatigue, and swollen lymph glands.

8. In fact, research has shown that exposure to microwaves and other electromagnetic radiation has been shown to increase viruses, bacteria, mold, parasites, and yeast in the blood of the human host.

9. Microwave exposure has been shown in studies to induce what is known as "subliminal" stress ( since the body does not know it is being stressed) causing the adrenal glands to excrete an abnormally greater amount of cortisol and adrenaline. Excretion of adrenaline, for one, can lead to irritability and a feeling of hyperactivity - the latter now very common in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In a continuous state this will eventually lead to adrenal exhaustion, in which the adrenal glands just stop working.

10. Microwave exposure has been shown to cause a decrease of 5-HT in the blood. 5-HT is a precursor to the production of the brain hormone serotonin. Low levels of serotonin have been linked to anxiety and depression. An increase in anxiety and depression can in turn be linked to to an increase in the number of suicides.

11. Microwave exposure has been shown to induce a decrease in levels of the brain hormone norepinephrine. This hormone is essential for control of the autonomic nervous system, and lack of it can lead to autonomic nervous system disorders. For example, if the autonomic nervous system is not working properly, the body will have trouble regulating its temperature - i.e. cooling itself when it is warm and heating itself when it is cold. This could lead to feeling colder than one would normally when it is cold and feeling warmer than one would normally when it is warm. An abnormal decrease in norepinephrine levels has also been connected to short-term memory disturbances and depression.

12. Production of the brain hormone melatonin has also been shown to be altered by exposure to microwaves. This brain hormone and antioxidant is necessary for proper sleep. 42 million (approximately one in five) Americans now take sleep medication for insomnia while others often experience sleep disturbances due to exposure to electromagnetic radiation (EMR). A drop in melatonin levels has also been connected with increases in breast cancer.

13. A drop in the levels of the brain hormone, dopamine, has also been shown to be connected with microwave radiation exposure. A drop in dopamine levels has been linked with depression.

14. Exposure to electromagnetic radiation has been shown to effect an abnormal drop in the levels of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. A drop in the levels of this neurotransmitter has been linked to a number of neurological and neuromuscular disorders - including Alzheimer's disease.

15. Some electromagnetic frequencies have been shown to induce restlessness and hence may very well also be responsible for a syndrome called restless leg syndrome (RLS).

16. Electromagnetic fields- like those emitted by cell phones - have been shown to alter regional cerebral blood flow. In conditions like autism and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) it has been shown via SPECT (Single Proton Emission Computed Tomography) scans that there is a decreased flow of blood to the brain.

17. Numerous studies have connected microwave and other electromagnetic radiation exposure to an increase in allergies. Microwave exposure has been shown to turn on mast cells to produce more histamine - the chemical responsible for allergic reactions - and other electromagnetic fields have been shown to actually increase the number of mast cells in the body. Microwaves have also been found to increase Immunoglobulin antibodies in the body. Immunoglobulin antibodies are responsible for triggering an allergic reaction to a particular substance or protein. Many researchers and scientists were - and still are - puzzled by the fact that the East German population had so few allergies in comparison to the West German population when the two countries unified. But what they failed to examine is the simple fact that East Germany had much stricter regulations regarding ambient radiation levels than West Germany. Since East Germany adopted West Germany's standards, allergies in former East Germany have since reached par with the levels of former West Germany.

18. Microwave exposure has also been shown to adversely affect the heart and could very well be linked to heart irregularities and responsible for triggering heart attacks.

19. Exposure to microwave radiation has also been shown to effect an abnormal increase in nitric oxide (NO). One theory holds that an abnormal increase in cellular calcium will also lead to an abnormal increase in cellular NO, which in excess produces a damage-producing free radical or oxidant called peroxynitrite.

20. Microwave exposure has been shown to open the blood brain barrier (BBB). The BBB protects the brain from foreign substances like viruses, bacteria, and chemical toxins in the blood which may injure the brain. Thus, exposure to microwave radiation could very well open people up to viral and bacterial infections of the brain which they would not normally get otherwise.

21. There has been a drastic increase in brain tumors and other cancers - not to mention diseases such as autism, ADHD, Chronic Fatigue Immune Deficiency Syndrome, and Alzheimer's - with the advent of the cell phone. Especially, after 1984 (the year the first cellular phone networks were set up in most major cities in the USA) there was a notable jump in children's brain tumors according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Brain tumors are now the number two cause of death in children followed by leukemia. Just last year seven people in Melbourne at RMIT University working in a building on the top two floors underneath a cell phone mast suddenly were diagnosed with brain tumors. There has also continuously been an exponential increase in autism since the advent and increase in numbers worldwide of the cell phone.

22. There have been numerous confirmed cases of deformities in animals and plants near cell phone towers. Now, in heavily electropolluted Japan it is very common for women to have miscarriages in their last trimester of pregnancy. Usually, the fetus is deformed. Cell-phone use has also recently been shown to lower sperm count in men the longer they use the phone ( e.g. one hour as opposed to four hours).

The cell phone industry makes 100s of billions of dollars in profits every year. They have the money and the power to influence politicians, the media, and even the research. Unethical researchers receive mass funding from this industry and are pressured to tell you it's safe while the researchers who inform us of its dangers have consistently had their funding cut. Over 6000 German doctors have signed "The Friedburger Appeal" after recognizing a connection between many of the symptoms listed above and exposure to microwave radiation and other EMR and after the German government has failed to act to protect its citizenry. The only way the cell phone industry gets its power is because consumers pay them their money. They have created an imaginary need or addiction. But if you heed the information above, then you will realize that you do not need this "unnecessary evil" - or rather you need it like you need a brain tumor. As a consumer you have the power to affect change. Hence, you are either part of the problem or part of the solution! You can decide. You have a choice - that is - unless you are Unconscious!

"All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing"

P.S. The cell phone industry has been buying up the patents on inventions that help protect cell phone users from the harmful radiation emitted by cell phones. Unfortunately, it is a catch-22 situation for them since if they use them, they are hence admitting what they have been denying all along - that cell phones are actually dangerous. This would open them up to a plethora of possible lawsuits. Either way, the consumer loses.

I am all for being open minded with such a dynamic condition as ASD, but this video and her website seem realllllly fishy. It sort of reminds me of that Japanese scientist who tries to say that the crystallization of water is affected by words written on the beaker it freezes in... But you never know, it is another factor that has increased along with the rise of autism, I think its worth a serious look.

Out of time: A possible link between
mirror neurons, autism and electromagnetic
radiation
Ian M. Thornton

Received 17 January 2006; accepted 19 January 2006

Summary
Recent evidence suggests a link between autism and the human mirror neuron system. In this paper, I argue that temporal disruption from the environment may play an important role in the observed mirror neuron dysfunction, leading in turn to the pattern of deficits associated with autism. I suggest that the developing nervous system of an infant may be particularly prone to temporal noise that can interfere with the initial calibration of brain networks such as the mirror neuron system. The most likely source of temporal noise in the environment is artificially
generated electromagnetic radiation. To date, there has been little evidence that electromagnetic radiation poses a direct biological hazard. It is clear, however, that time-varying electromagnetic waves have the potential to temporally modulate the nervous system, particularly when populations of neurons are required to act together. This modulation may be completely harmless for the fully developed nervous system of an adult. For an infant, this same
temporal disruption might act to severely delay or disrupt vital calibration processes.

How microwave ovens work

A microwave oven consists of a high voltage transformer, an electron tube called magnetron, a wave guide fan, and a cooking chamber. The transformer passes electric energy to the magnetron, which converts this electric energy into microwave radiation. The radiation is reflected in the cooking chamber and absorbed by the food.

As a result of the microwave absorption, the water molecules in the food begin to vibrate. This molecular movement produces heat, which cooks the food. Foods that have higher concentrations of water molecules cook faster. In thicker foods, the outer part is cooked by the microwaves and the inner part is cooked by conduction of heat from the heated outer part.

You can read the rest here

http://www.wisegeek.org/what-is-microwave-radiation.htm

Am I understanding this correctly? The food absorbs the radiation, the radiation causes the water molecules to vibrate, the vibration creates heat, this heat cooks the food. How could microwaved food be healthy to eat when it is cooked with radiation?

I think microwave radiation is a harmful and deadly type of pollution. I don't believe we should be cooking our food with it. We may be slowly poisoning ourselves every time we use a microwave oven.

No, you are not understanding this correctly. Microwaved food is not radioactive. Read the rest of the article you linked:

Concerns about microwaves turning food radioactive are baseless. The "radiation" refers to the way in which microwaves move, not radioactivity. Microwaves are of a non-ionizing character, which means that they do not have the energy to cause chemical changes in substances as would happen in the case of radioactivity.

[Metabolic changes in cells under electromagnetic radiation of mobile communication systems].
Review is devoted to the analysis of biological effects of microwaves.

The results of last years' researches indicated the potential risks of long-term low-level microwaves exposure for human health. The analysis of metabolic changes in living cells under the exposure of microwaves from mobile communication systems indicates that this factor is stressful for cells. Among the reproducible effects of low-level microwave radiation are overexpression of heat shock proteins, an increase of reactive oxygen species level, an increase of intracellular Ca2+, damage of DNA, inhibition of DNA reparation, and induction of apoptosis. Extracellular-signal-regulated kinases ERK and stress-related kinases p38MAPK are involved in metabolic changes. Analysis of current data suggests that the concept of exceptionally thermal mechanism of biological effects of microwaves is not correct. In turn, this raises the question of the need to revaluation of modern electromagnetic standards based on thermal effects of non-ionizing radiation on biological systems.

Here interesting article on cell phone radiation lawsuits. It appears cell phone radiation may cause brain tissue damage.

Cell Phone Radiation Lawsuits:

Bernstein Liebhard LLP Notes New Study Finding Cell Phone Radiation May Cause Brain Tissue Damage

The Firm is actively filing cell phone radiation lawsuits on behalf of individuals who allegedly suffered brain tumors from cell phones.

This research is just further evidence that exposure to cell phone radiation can affect the brain in harmful ways. We agree with the study authors that more research on this issue is urgently needed.

New York, NY (PRWEB) March 27, 2013

Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing clients in cell phone radiation lawsuits, notes that a new study has found that radiation from cell phones may cause damage to brain tissue.
According to a report from the Daily Mail, researchers with Finland’s Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority found that one hour of cell phone radiation can cause cells in blood vessel walls to shrink, allowing potentially harmful substances in the blood to 'leak' into the brain. The two-year study also found that repeated exposure to cell phone radiation could make the blood-brain barrier more permeable, leading to increased brain damage. “Repeated occurrences of these events on a daily basis, over a long period of time, could become a health hazard due to possible accumulation of brain tissue damage,” the study authors concluded.*

“This research is just further evidence that exposure to cell phone radiation can affect the brain in harmful ways. We agree with the study authors that more research on this issue is urgently needed,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP. The Firm is currently investigating the link between cell phones and brain cancer, and is part of a small consortium of law firms actively representing plaintiffs in cell phone radiation lawsuits.

Brain Tumors from Cell Phones
Over the past several years, a growing body of research has found evidence of a connection between the development of brain tumors and exposure to cell phone radiation. For example, the World Health Organization’s International Agency on Research for Cancer (IARC) classified cell phone radiation as possibly carcinogenic in May 2011, after the Interphone study found that using cell phones for as little as 30 minutes per day resulted in a 40% increased risk for a type of brain tumor called glioma.**

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently submitted a proposal to reevaluate cell phone radiation emission standards, something it has not done since 1996*** The U.S. Government Accountability Office (“GAO”) has criticized the current standards as being outdated compared to those of international regulatory agencies, and for failing to reflect the most recent research on cell phone radiation.****

Bernstein Liebhard LLP is currently offering free, no obligation cell phone radiation lawsuit evaluations to individuals who may have developed cancerous brain tumors from cell phones. Alleged victims of cell phone radiation may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. For more information about cell phone radiation lawsuits and the potential connection between cell phones and brain tumors, please visit Bernstein Liebhard LLP’s website, or call 1-877-779-1414 to speak with an attorney today.

Here is why I think we should be worried about our children's exposure to Electromagnetic Fields. I think adding antioxidants to their diet would be of benefit also.

Exposure to EMF may cause sleep insufficiency and oxidative stress

Background:

Exposure to extremely low frequency electromagnetic field (ELF-EMF), especially among electronic equipment repairers may induce oxidative stress and affect sleep quality.

Aims:

This study was carried out to (a) investigate the effect of exposure to ELF-EMF on the malondialdehyde (MDA) levels among electronic equipment repairers as an indicator of oxidative stress; and melatonin hormone levels; and (b) to study the prevalence of sleep insufficiency among electronic equipment repairers exposed to ELF-EMF.

Materials and Methods:

A cross-sectional study was carried out on 50 electronic equipment repairers at high risk of exposure to ELF-EMF, and a matched control group at lower risk of exposure to ELF-EMF. All the participants completed a self-administered questionnaire about medical and occupational histories; and sleep sufficiency. The plasma melatonin and MDA levels of the study subjects were assessed.

Results

The mean level of serum melatonin in the electronic equipment repairers was lower than that of the controls (P < 0.01). Moreover, serum MDA mean level of the electronic equipment repairers was higher than that of the controls (P < 0.01). Sleep insufficiency was more frequent among electronic equipment repairers (18.00%) in comparison with the controls (8.70%) (P > 0.05)

Conclusion

The electronic equipment repairers who were exposed to EMF had lower plasma melatonin mean level and higher MDA mean levels, indicating a state of oxidative stress. Moreover, exposure to EMF was associated with sleep insufficiency. Health education about the hazards of EMF, shortenings of EMF exposure time per day, and taking antioxidant vitamins should be done to ameliorate the oxidative effect of EMF on those workers.

I have to laugh about the cell phone companies investing in protective technologies. It reminds me of when I worked for a particular ABC health agency when a investment group of tobacco farmers from Japan wanted an exclusive license on certain cancer technologies. They get you coming and going....

And yes, oxidative stress is huge. Liken it to a chain reaction in the body that keeps multiplying as ROS cells bump into healthy cells and convert those to ROS and on and on... Hard to stop the reaction -- and extremely damaging. Those not on the spectrun get other ROS condtions -- even issues like asthma are related to ROS imbalance.

I know Dr. Amy does not know much about the SOD mutations -- but I think those are the key to reducing ROS.

NUTRIENTS IN THE TREATMENT OF ELECTROMAGNETIC SENSITIVITY (Microwave Sickness)

Table 8
Large oral doses of vitamins help correct vitamin deficiency. Supplementing the vitamins A (25,000 IU), C (2,000-3,000) mg daily plus bioflavonoids and rutin, E (400 IU up to 800 IU) and the trace minerals, especially selenium (200 mg daily), can inhibit the promotion of free radicals.
Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is natural in barley grass, very young broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, wheat grass and most green plants. This antioxidant aids in the body’s utilization of zinc, copper and manganese. If the SOD supplement is in the pill form, it must be enteric coated.
Exposure to radiation pollution is destructive to vitamins A, C, E, K and several B vitamins, and essential fatty acids. Both vitamin A and beta-carotene are absorbed more readily when optimal amounts, of B-complex, vitamins C, D and E, and zinc are present in the diet.
Intestinal candida should be resolved if excessive. Yogurt, buttermilk and kefir are recommended, since they contain microorganisms that protect the gastrointestinal tract.
Also recommended are calcium, magnesium, beta-carotene and the amino acids glutamine and cysteine.
