assistance dogs for children with autism

Postby neil » Sun Oct 14, 2007 7:15 am

I run a programme in Ireland which teaches assistance dogs to help children with autism and their families. I am about to expand the programme as it has proved over the last three years to meet the aims and objectives we had put in place at the outset. Ireland currently has 25 assistance dogs working in this role with a demand for significantly more.
I would be interested to hear what experience anyone has of dogs assisting children with autism in this way.
Out of interest I have just finished reading 'A friend like Henry' Nuala Gardner's story of how her son Dale was helped to break out of his own autistic world with the aid of his Golden Retriever Henry. The book is published by Hodder & Stoughton in the UK and Ireland ISBN 978 0 340 93401 2 .
